SCIENCE IN THE HARBOR

Volunteer Docents & Internships

Volunteer Docents

Our volunteer docent program offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute directly to ocean education and conservation. Working alongside our naturalist team, docents assist with passenger outreach and education aboard our vessels — helping bring the science and wonder of Stellwagen Bank to life for guests of all ages and backgrounds. If you’re passionate about marine life and enjoy connecting with people, we’d love to hear from you.

Internship Program

Our paid, 10-week internship runs from late June through early September and offers an immersive, hands-on experience aboard an active whale watch vessel. Interns work alongside our crew and naturalist team, rotating through multiple roles that include deck operations, passenger education, naturalist assistance, and onboard data collection — contributing directly to the conservation research and public awareness efforts that sit at the heart of what we do. It’s a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how science, education, and ocean stewardship come together on a working whale watch vessel.

The position averages 40 hours per week and includes weekdays, weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. Peak season days can be long and physically demanding, but for those with an interest in marine science, ocean conservation, or public education, it’s a uniquely rewarding way to spend a summer on the water.
