SCIENCE IN THE HARBOR

Research & Education

Every ticket purchased with Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch directly supports marine mammal research and conservation. For over 50 years, our naturalists have collected data and photographs on every trip — contributing to a long-term dataset that has meaningfully advanced our understanding of the whales of the western North Atlantic and helped shape efforts to protect them.

Research

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watches offer a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Unlike many other whale watching excursions, our trips go far beyond the ordinary — each voyage is thoughtfully designed to deepen your understanding of whales, marine life, and the extraordinary ocean habitat that surrounds us.

Every trip is led by a trained naturalist who will guide you through an engaging presentation on the whales you may encounter, their behaviors, and the fascinating geology, flora, and fauna of Cape Cod. With state-of-the-art educational materials on board, we help foster a genuine connection between our passengers and the marine mammals they’re observing.

Our goal is simple: we want every passenger to step off our vessels with a richer appreciation for the waters surrounding Cape Cod and the remarkable wealth of life it sustains.

Photo-identification has allowed us to:

9
Track individual whales over time, building a clearer picture of lifespan and aging
9
Document calving intervals and reproductive patterns
9
Map migration routes and seasonal movements
9
Estimate population size and monitor trends
9
Reconstruct family trees across generations

All of this data is entered into our database and shared with scientists, researchers, and organizations working in the field. Dolphin Fleet proudly contributes to the Gulf of Maine Humpback Whale Catalog, curated by the Center for Coastal Studies — a collaborative effort that strengthens our collective understanding of these animals and the ecosystems they depend on.

“Salt” the Humpback Whale

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch has a unique history with one of the most well-known humpbacks in the world, “Salt”! The founder of Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, Aaron Avellar, named “Salt” after the white speckles on her dorsal fin. “Salt” was one of the very first named whales that could be individually identified. The tradition of naming humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine has continued since the 1970’s!

Education

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watches are unique! Unlike many other whale watches, our trips offers a wide spectrum of educational tools that go beyond the “average whale watch”. All trips are designed to enhance our awareness of whales, marine life, and the marine habitat that surrounds us. Each trip is guided by a trained naturalist who will do a presentation on the whales you may see, their behavior, and information on the geology, flora, and fauna of Cape Cod! We have state of the art education materials to provide a better understanding and connection with the marine mammals you will be observing.

Our goal is to have each passenger depart our vessels with a greater understanding and appreciation of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and the wealth of life it supports.
